My Areas of Interest Include:

  • Professional Interests:Emegency preparedness, collection management, leadership, space planning, scholarly communications, and assessment. I have presented at conferences on disaster planning, space planning, and assessment.

  • Developed and facilitated the NN/LM Earthquake Summit in San Francisco, CA, March 6, 2012.
  • Developed and facilitated the NN/LM Hurricane Summit in Miami, Florida, February 8, 2012.
  • Texas Library Association Annual Meeting, Austin, Texas, April 22, 2011. Presented and participated as a member of a panel discussion on “Library Disaster and Continuity of Operations Planning.”
  • Disaster Information Outreach Symposium, Disaster Information Management Research Center, National Library of Medicine, March 28-29, 2011.  Presented, as an invited speaker, “Going After Barriers:  Experiences of the NN/LM National Emergency Preparedness & Response Initiative”
  • District of Columbia Area Health Sciences Libraries Meeting, March 27, 2011.  Presented NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Initiative activities and facilitated discussion.

  • "What About the Library?  The Value of Libraries Before and After a Disaster,” Richmond, Christiansburg, and Hampton, VA, October and November, 2010. With the Library of Virginia and sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, facilitated three regional meetings in Virginia to promote library involvement in community disaster response.  Presented and conducted panel discussions with invited speakers.

  • "A 10-Step Approach to Service Continuity Planning." Invited speaker at a program offered for North Carolina AHEC librarians and hospital emergency preparedness administrators, Raleigh and Charlotte, March 2010.
  • "Status of the NN/LM National Emergency Preparedness & Response Initiative." Invited at the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting, Tulsa, Oklahoma, October 2009.
  • "A 10-Step Approach to Service Continuity Planning." Invited speaker at the Mid Continental Chapter of the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting, Breckenridge, Colorado, September 2009.
  • Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) Annual Community Forum, July 2009 Invited speaker, to present NN/LM’s Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan, highlighting the back-up ILL procedures developed between the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at the University of Virginia and the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • Train-the-trainer sessions, “A 10-Step Approach to Service Continuity Plan,” Spring 2009 Developed curriculum and instructional model for NN/LM’s service continuity model, presented training to NN/LM staff nationwide.
  • 2009 ILLiad International Conference, March 2009 Presented, with Melanie Norton, on ILL back-up arrangement between the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at the University of Virginia and the Health Sciences Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, incorporating service continuity initiatives from the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan.
  • Taught the “A 10-Step Approach to Service Continuity Planning” on behalf of NN/LM Presented virtual classes to NN/LM members in the Pacific Northwest Region, Pacific Southwest Region, Mid-Continental Region, and Mid-Atlantic Region
  • University of Virginia Emergency Preparedness Forum, October 2008 Addressed initial meeting of emergency planners from all departments at the University of Virginia, giving an overview of emergency preparedness at the UVa Health Sciences Library as well as highlighting the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan and online toolkit.
  • Maine Health Science Libraries Information Consortium (HSLIC), June 6, 2008 Presented overview of the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan to the HSLIC annual meeting.
  • Consortium of Biomedical Libraries in the South (CONBLS), April 2008, Johnson City, TN As keynote speaker, presented overview of the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan to the CONBLS bi-annual retreat.
  • NN/LM Regional Office visits and training, Spring 2008 Between February and June, visited each of the eight NN/LM Regional offices to introduce the plan and provide training for the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Plan.
  • Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting, October 2007 Poster Presentation: “Resourceful Blogging: a Fresh Ingredient in the Recipe for Information Sharing,” co-presented with Susan Yowell. The poster featured using the Disaster Planning for Health Sciences Libraries blog (now the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response online toolkit) as an information resource.
  • Tennessee Health Sciences Library Association Meeting, September 2007 Hired as a consultant to coordinate and present a day-and-a-half program on emergency preparedness.
