Firefox Proxy Setup

Use Mozilla Firefox to access UVA resources from off-Grounds

Access to UVa licensed resources such as online books, journals, and search tools (e.g. Ovid MEDLINE) is restricted to UVa faculty, staff, and students. To access these resources from outside UVa, use the UVa proxy server via EZproxy.

As of May 15, 2012, the University has implemented a new EZproxy method to provide off-Grounds access to library resources. The new proxy server will not require a separate account or browser configurations, and will work on mobile devices. To access library resources from off-Grounds, you will be prompted for a NetBadge login, which is the same system used to access your UVa e-mail. In the event that you experience difficulty accessing resources via the recommended EZproxy method, you may wish to try the steps below to configure Firefox for use with the older, Squid Proxy method.

  1. Click on Tools --> Options for Windows, or Firefox --> Preferences for a Mac.
  2. Click on Advanced, then the Network tab:

    On Windows:

    On the Mac:

    Mac Firefox Options Menu
  3. Click on the Settings button.
  4. Click the radio button for Automatic proxy configuration URL. In the text box, type http://proxy.virginia.edu/ as shown.
  5. Click the OK button, then OK again.

Log-in to the Proxy Server

  1. Once you have configured Firefox to use the UVa proxy server, you can access Library resources such as full-text journals and books from your computer. When you attempt to access any restricted Library resource such as Ovid MEDLINE or full-text journals you will be prompted for the proxy login.
  2. Enter your UVa computing ID (your e-mail ID, e.g. mst3k) in the User name field. In the Password field, enter the password you chose when you created your proxy server account.
  3. Click OK to log into the proxy server.

You should now have access to restricted resources for the rest of your Firefox session.

If you forget your proxy password, you can re-create your account by going to the Proxy Server Account Management page.

If your login fails, or you encounter any other problems using the proxy server, please call the ITC Help Desk at (434) 924-4357 or send e-mail to consult@virginia.edu for assistance.
