How do I scan a transparency in the Health Sciences Library?

Use the flatbed scanners and Phtoshop Elements, located near the Reserve Collection.

Introduction

What you are scanning (slide, transparency, film, etc.) and your intended final destination for the scan (PowerPoint, web, print, publication) will influence which software and settings you choose for your scan. Follow the instructions below for image scanning, or request in-person assistance from a TEC Team member.

Step-By-Step

Scanning:

  1. Open the scanner and remove the white opaque shield and the black slide holder.

  2. If you are scanning slides, place the slide holder on the glass, be sure to line up the arrows as shown below.

  3. Place your image in the scanner with the image facing the glass .
  4. On the computer’s desktop, click the icon Scan an Image .
  5. When Adobe Photoshop Elements opens, from the File menu, select Import. From the menu that pops up, select Epson Perfection 4180 .

  6. From the scanning dialog box, select the settings that best suit your needs:
    1. Document Type should be set to Film .
    2. Film Type should be set to Positive Film for slides or Negative Film for negatives.
    3. Image Type should be 24-bit Color for color, or 8-bit Grayscale for black and white.
    4. Resolution should be 300 dpi for print, 72 dpi for Web/PowerPoint.

    5. T arget Size is the final size of the scanned image. For instance, if you are scanning a slide for use in a PowerPoint presentation, you will want the Target Size to be larger. (If you cannot see Target Size options, click the small plus sign beside Target Size settings).

      400% increase is the recommended size for a PowerPoint Slide.

  7. Click Preview.

  8. Wait several seconds while the scanner warms up and scans a preview into the preview window on the right.
  9. If you are scanning slides, the scanner will automatically select your slides from the scanning bed as shown in the picture below. If you are scanning transparencies you will need to follow step 10 to select the important area of your image.

  11. Use the mouse (which will look like a crosshair tool in the preview window) to draw a marquee box around the portion of the image you wish to scan. (The marquee box looks like a line of marching ants).

    Move the marquee box around by clicking and dragging within its bounds with the hand cursor. Change marquee size by clicking and dragging marquee edges with the edges (arrow) cursors .

  12. When you are satisfied with your marquee, click Scan.

  13. When the scanner finishes, click Close at the bottom of the scan window to see your completed image capture in Photoshop Elements.
  14. Replace the black slide holder and white opaque shield as shown.

Saving images in the Health Sciences Library

  1. Save your image by selecting the File menu, then Save As .
  2. When the Save As dialog box opens, click the My Documents tab.

  3. Create a new folder by clicking the New Folder icon at the top of the screen (circled in red at the top of the screenshot). Name the folder using your UVa Computing ID (for example, mst3k). Once you have created the new folder, double click on it to open its contents.
  4. Select a file format from the dropdown menu:
    1. If  you plan to work on this image in Photoshop, select Photoshop format (.PSD).
    2. If you plan to use this image in PowerPoint, or to put it on the Web, select
      JPEG format (.JPG).
    3. If You plan to print this image or submit it for journal publication, select IFF format (.TIF).

  5. After selecting a format, in the File name box, enter a name for the file, then click Save .
