Introduction

There are several different bibliographic management programs available. Commonly used programs include EndNote, Reference Manager, and RefWorks. Each has advantages and disadvantages, including price, portability, installation, and structure.

Step-By-Step

    Financial Commitment

  1. If you are under a tight budget, RefWorks may be right for you. A University-wide site license makes it available to all UVa faculty, staff and students free of charge. However, once you leave the University, a subscription costs $70 per year.
  2. EndNote and Reference Manager are available for purchase at Cavalier Computers. EndNote costs approximately $200, with a student version available for $110. Reference Manager costs approximately $300, with a student version available for $110. Once the initial software purchase is made, there are no additional subscription fees.
    Database Portability

  1. If you find yourself working on a project at home, at the office, or on the road, RefWorks will be a good choice. Since it is Web-based, its databases can be accessed from any computer with Internet access.
  2. Databases created in EndNote or Reference Manager may be transferred using e-mail, CD, or portable USB drive. However, in order to use the database, the software must be installed on the computer being used.
    Easy Installation

  1. No installation is needed for RefWorks. Simply visit the RefWorks site from on-Grounds, or off-Grounds with your proxy account and sign up for an individual account.
  2. Easy installation on a local computer from a CD is needed for both EndNote and Reference Manager .
    Sophisticated Structure

  1. If your bibliographic database management needs are not bound by budget constraints or the need to be portable, then you may want to choose EndNote or Reference Manager .
  2. Both EndNote and Reference Manager have similar functionality and have a more sophisticated look, feel, and structure.
