Introduction

The built-in mail application called VersaMail on a Palm OS-based PDA may be configured to receive email from the UVa Gmail system. It is not possible to receive HS Outlook Mail on your Palm via this procedure. HS Outlook users must enable Outlook to sync email instead, via Palm Desktop and Outlook Conduit settings, and will provide only synced access to email.

Step-By-Step

  1. From a desktop or laptop computer, request a UVa Gmail account from ITC. UVa Gmail accounts are designed for students, but faculty and staff may also request UVa Gmail accounts through the link above.
  2. Log in to UVa Gmail at http://www.mail.virginia.edu.
  3. In the top right corner of the screen, select Settings, then select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. Next to IMAP Access, select Enable IMAP, then click Save Changes.

  5. In the top right corner of the screen, select Settings again, then select the Accounts tab.
    Note: You must reset your password inside of UVa Gmail for VersaMail to access UVa Gmail. It does not matter whether you reset to a new password or reset to your existing password, this change is necessary to inform Gmail of your password, since without this step, regular Netbadge authentication into UVa Gmail via the web does not complete thet setup required for PDA access to UVa Gmail.
  6. Next to Change Password, click the Change Password link, then click Yes, reset my password.

  7. Log out of UVa Gmail, then exit your browser.
  8. Restart your browser, then log in to UVa Gmail at http://www.mail.virginia.edu. When prompted, reset your UVa Gmail password. You may set it to the same password as you use for other UVa accounts.
  9. On the Palm, tap VersaMail (or Email) from the Palm Home screen.
  10. If not prompted to set up an account, tap the menu icon at the bottom left of the screen, select the Accounts menu, then Account Setup .
  11. Tap New…
  12. Name the account (UVa Gmail or your user id are suggested ).
  13. Select Other as the Mail Service.
  14. Select IMAP as the Protocol, then tap Next .
  15. Enter your UVa email address (e.g. mst3k@virginia.edu) as the username.
  16. Enter the password you just set for UVa Gmail, then tap Next .
  17. Email address: email id@virginia.edu (e.g. mst3k@virginia.edu).
  18. Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
  19. Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
  20. Tap Next, then tap Advanced .
  21. Under Incoming Server Settings, check the box for Use Secure Connection (SSL). Make sure the Port Number is set to 993 after selecting SSL, then tap Next .
  22. Under Outgoing Server Settings, check the box for Use Secure Connection (SSL), and set the Port Number to 465, then tap Done .
  23. Setup is complete. Launch VersaMail and select the account you just created.
