How do I print from my wireless laptop to HSL printers?

Answer:

It is possible to print from your own laptop to U.Va. printers provided by Printing and Copying Services in the Health Sciences Library and other University public computing locations. Follow the instructions in this topic to set up wireless printing on your laptop, or Ask Rover for assistance if you are in the Library.

Step by Step:

Select your operating system to see specific instructions:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP
  • Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start Menu, then enter (or copy and paste) this exact address in the search bar: \\pcs-cas.eservices.virginia.edu

  2. Enter your login info using the format eservices\userid (e.g. eservices\mst3k). Your password is your ESERVICES password. If you do not know your ESERVICES password, refer to this page. Be sure to check Remember my credentials so you do not need to restart this process every time you print.

  3. Right click the printer you wish to install, then click Connect.

  4. The printer now shows up in your Devices and Printers control panel.

Windows XP

  1. Click the Start Menu, then click Run. Enter (or copy and paste) this exact address into the text box: \\pcs-cas.eservices.virginia.edu

  2. Enter your login info using the format eservices\userid (e.g. eservices\mst3k). Your password is your ESERVICES password. If you do not know your ESERVICES password, refer to this page. Be sure to check Remember my password so you do not need to restart this process every time you print.

  3. Right click the printer and click Connect.

  4. The printer will now show up in your Printers control panel.

Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6

  1. Click the Apple Menu (shaped like an apple) in the upper left portion of your screen, and click System Preferences. Click Print & Fax.

  2. Click the + key to add a printer.

  3. Right click the toolbar, then click Customize Toolbar.

  4. Drag the Advanced Item into the toolbar.

  5. Select Advanced, then change the Type to Windows, and enter (or copy and paste) this exact URL into the text box: smb://pcs-cas.eservices.virginia.edu/pcs_public_bw_printers

For color printers, enter this URL: smb://pcs-cas.eservices.virginia.edu/pcs_public_color_printers

    • Give it any Name you choose, and a Location if you wish.
    • For Print Using: select Generic PostScript Printer.
    • Click Add.
  6. Select Duplex Printing Unit, then click Continue.

  7. Your printer icon will now start bouncing in your dock at the bottom of the screen.

IF YOU ARE USING 10.5, YOUR PRINTER ICON WILL NOT BOUNCE, BUT WILL JUST SIT THERE DOING NOTHING. THIS IS A KNOWN BUG IN 10.5.

Click on the bouncing printer (or non-bouncing printer for 10.5) and then double click the print job to authenticate.

  8. Enter your login info using the format eservices\userid (e.g. eservices\mst3k). Your password is your ESERVICES password. If you do not know your ESERVICES password, refer to this page. Be sure to check Remember this password in my keychain so you do not need to restart this process every time you print.

  9. The printer is now installed.
