How do I connect to UVa resources with my iPhone/iPod Touch from off-Grounds?
Answer
Configure the UVa proxy server for a non-UVa wireless network within range of your iPhone/iPod Touch.

Introduction
Access to UVa resources such as MEDLINE, full-text journals, and MD Consult is restricted to UVa faculty, staff, and students. To access these resources from outside UVa, you will need to use the UVa proxy server. It is possible to configure proxy on an iPod Touch or iPhone using Wi-Fi, though it must be set for each wireless network individually. The Health Sciences Library provides these instructions as a courtesy to patrons requesting assistance with mobile device setup. It does not imply support from ITC for these services on a mobile device.
Step-By-Step
There are two things you have to do to use the proxy to connect from off-Grounds: create a proxy account, and configure the wireless network settings on your iPhone/iPod Touch for the proxy server.
- First: Create an account on the proxy server. On a computer, go to https://proxy.virginia.edu/accountsetup.cgi and follow the instructions to create an account.
- Second: Configure your iPhone/iPod Touch to access the proxy server on your current wireless network.
- From off-Grounds, make sure your iPhone/iPod Touch is connected to a non-UVa wireless network, such as at home or in a coffee shop.
- On the iPhone/iPod Touch, tap Settings .
- Tap the arrow beside Wi-Fi.
- Make sure the slider switch for Wi-Fi is set to ON, then tap the blue arrow beside the wireless network to which you are currently connected (e.g. chalet). You must be within range of at least one active wireless network to enable proxy.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Wi-Fi settings screen, set HTTP Proxy to Auto, then in the URL field, enter http://proxy.virginia.edu/ (the trailing slash is required).

- Test your proxy connection from off-Grounds. Use your username and the proxy password you created in Step 1. If your setup has been successful, you will now be prompted for your proxy username and password each time you connect to a UVa restricted resource using your iPhone/iPod Touch and this wireless network. If you connect from a different, non-UVa wireless network, repeat steps 1 through 6 to configure the new network for proxy.
