Introduction

What you scan (image, text, photo, slide, document, etc) and your intended final destination for the scan (PowerPoint, web, print, publication) dictate which software and settings you choose. Follow the instructions below for image scanning. For one-on-one help, request in-person assistance from a TEC Team member.)

Step-By-Step

Scanning:

  1. Place your image in the scanner with the image facing the glass.
  2. On the computer’s desktop, click the icon Scan an Image.

  3. When Adobe Photoshop Elements opens, from the File menu, select Import. From the menu that pops up, select Epson Perfection 4180.

    ScanImage_a

  4. From the scanning dialog box, select the settings that best suit your needs:
    1. Document Type should be set to Reflective. (For slides and transparencies, refer to How do I scan a transparency )
    2. Auto Exposure should be set to document for paper, or photo for photographs/glossy book pages.
    3. Image Type should be 24-bit Color for color, or 8-bit Grayscale for black and white.
    4. Resolution should be 300 dpi for print, or 72 dpi for Web/PowerPoint .
    5. Target Size is the final size of the scanned image. For instance, if you are scanning a 4”x5” photo for use in a PowerPoint presentation, you may want the Target Size to be larger. (If you cannot see Target Size options, click the small plus sign beside Target Size settings).

    6. Click Preview. Wait several seconds while the scanner warms up and scans a preview into the preview window on the right.
    7. Use the mouse (which will look like a crosshair tool in the preview window) to draw a marquee box around the portion of the image you wish to scan. (The marquee box looks like a line of marching ants). Move the marquee box around by clicking and dragging within its bounds with the hand cursor. Change marquee size by clicking and dragging marquee edges with the edges (arrow) cursors .
    8. When you are satisfied with your marquee, click Scan .

  5. When the scanner finishes, click Close at the bottom of the scan window to see your completed image capture in Photoshop Elements.
