How do I connect to UVa library resources from Off-Grounds? (via old Squid Proxy method)

Answer:

Access to UVa licensed resources such as online books, journals, and search tools (e.g. Ovid MEDLINE) is restricted to UVa faculty, staff, and students. To access these resources from outside UVa,  please visit the new instructions for setting up the UVa Proxy server via EZproxy. If you are having difficulty with EZproxy, the instructions below for the older "Squid Proxy" method  may be helpful in some situations.

Step by Step:

To use the proxy to connect from off-Grounds:

  • First: Create an account on the proxy server. Go to https://proxy.virginia.edu/accountsetup.cgi and follow the instructions to create an account.
  • Second: Configure your Web browser or mobile device to access the proxy server.
Windows Macintosh Mobile
Firefox Firefox iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
via data or wifi (more secure)
Internet
Explorer 7 or 8
Safari iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
via wifi only
Chrome Chrome

  • Third: Test your proxy connection from off-Grounds. Use your username and the proxy password you created in Step 1.

If you do not see your computer operating system or browser on the list above, use one listed above, or, for an alternative method to access Liibrary resources from home, see information on computer connections via UVa Anywhere. UVaAnywhere gives you a UVa IP address, allowing direct access to UVa-only web pages and also services such as Home Directory.

Remote access is not yet available for Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, or other mobile devices at UVa.

Remote access to UpToDate is only available through links on the Medical Student portal page and the Nursing Student portal page.
