How do I Connect from Home? (UVa-Anywhere)

Answer

To get to protected resources from outside UVa, we recommend the proxy server. However, in certain cases, UVa-Anywhere is an alternative.

Introduction

Access to UVa resources such as MEDLINE, full-text journals, and MD Consult is restricted to UVa faculty, staff, and students. To get to these resources from outside UVa, we recommend the proxy server. However, an alternative is UVa-Anywhere. In addition to providing off-Grounds access to Library resources, UVaAnywhere also enables you to use other UVa network resources from home, such as your Home Directory.

Step-By-Step

To set up UVa-Anywhere from home:

STEP 1: Obtain a personal certificate.
  1. Go to ITC's personal certificate page:

  2. Read the digital certificate agreement notice and click OK.
  3. Enter your computing ID, password, last name, University ID, and birthdate in the appropriate blanks, and then click Submit information.
STEP 2: Download and install the VPN client.

Go to the VPN client page:

  1. If you do not already have a UVa Digital Certificate on your computer, select the option to enter your UVa Computing ID and password to verify that you are UVa-affiliated.
  2. You will then be directed to the VPN client download.
  3. Read the disclaimer and click " I Agree" to proceed:

  4. When prompted, click " run" to install itc-vpn481.exe:

STEP 3: Configure UVa-Anywhere.
  1. Open the program by clicking the padlock icon:

  2. Make sure to select your certificate when you use the client for the first time. Under the " Connection Entries" tab choose UVa-Anywhere, then click on " Modify." Under " Certificate Authentication" choose the certificate you made in Step 1, then click on " Save.' To make a connection, click on " Connect."

You are now all set to use UVa-Anywhere to access UVa-restricted resources.
