How do I keep my Refworks databases when graduating from UVa?


No need to worry about losing your RefWorks database(s) if you are graduating from UVa. UVa alumni may set up a RefWorks alumni account and transfer their UVa RefWorks databases to a new alumni account for lifelong access.

Step by Step: 
  1. Visit
  2. In the Group Code box, enter the current UVa alumni group code. If you do not know the current code, send email to requesting the code.

  3. On the Login for RefWorks Alumni Site page, click Sign Up for a New Account.

  4. Complete steps 1 and 2 of Create Account. For Type of Userin step 2, User Information, select University of Virginia from the dropdown box.

  5. Click Register.


Important Note: If you have an existing RefWorks database, you will need to follow the Backup & Restore instructions below to move your database from your old account into a newly created database under the RefWorks Alumni account you just created above.


  1. Log in to your non-alumni RefWorks account.
  2. Under Tools, select Backup & Restore.
  3. Select or de-select all options per your preferences, then click Perform Backup.
  4. Your backup file will be created and saved in the folder of your choice. The typical name of the backup file is RWUVirginiaXXX.rwb where XXX is your database name.


  1. Log in to the Alumni RefWorks account that you created in the first part of these instructions.
  2. Under Tools, select Backup & Restore.
  3. Under Restore, select include References, then find your backup file in the Restore Source selection.
  4. Click Perform Restore. Your database should now be moved from your old account to your Alumni RefWorks account.
