How do I export Ovid citations into EndNote for the Mac?

Answer:

Conducting a good Ovid search takes time and effort. Save yourself steps when you find the citations you want -- use Ovid's built-in tools to export Ovid search results directly into EndNote bibliographic database software.

Step by Step:
  1. On the Library's Home page, in the Databases column, select Ovid MEDLINE.
  2. In the Ovid MEDLINE screen, perform your search. Follow the directions to refine your search if you so choose.
  3. Once you have completed your search, click Display.

click Display to see display options for articles that match your
    search
  4. Select each listed item you want to export to your bibliographic database by clicking its checkbox, then click Export.

  5. In the Export Citation List box, set Export to to Endnote (change from default RefWorks). Leave the default for Select Fields to Display as Citation+Abstract. Click Export Citation(s).

Note: If you wish to use MeSH headings as your EndNote descriptors, Citation+Abstract+Subject Headings is the option for Select Fields to Display.

From this point, there are different instructions depending on which Web browser you are using - Firefox (recommended) or Safari.

Using FireFox

  • After you have completed your Ovid search and chosen to export citations to EndNote, EndNote will launch automatically.
  • In the Select a Reference Library dialog box, locate the EndNote "library" you want to import ("library" is EndNote's term for a database), then click Open.

  • If you don't already have a library, create one by selecting New from the File menu. EndNote will automatically import the citations into your EndNote library.
  • You will then be presented with only the citations you have just imported into EndNote library. To see all of the citations in your library, from EndNote's References menu, select Show All References.

Note: Default installation in later versions of EndNote includes only 100 files for Import Filters, Output Styles, and Connection Files. If you need to install additional files, selection Customizer... from the EndNote menu, then check the boxes for Connections, Import Filters, and Output Styles. Proceed as prompted after those selections.

Using Safari

  • A file named ovidweb.cgi will be saved to your computer's default download location (usually Downloads folder).
  • To import the citations contained in the file ovidweb.cgi into EndNote, open EndNote.
  • Open or create a library into which you wish to import your citations.
  • From the File menu, select Import..., then select ovidweb.cgi as the file to import.
  • From the Import Options dropdown, select MEDLINE (OvidSP) from the list of filters, then click Import.

    import ovidweb.cgi

Note: Default installation in later versions of EndNote includes only 100 files for Import Filters, Output Styles, and Connection Files. If you need to install additional files, from the EndNote menu, select Customizer... then check the boxes for Connections, Import Filters, and Output Styles, then proceed as prompted.

  • You will then be presented with only the citations you have just imported into EndNote library. To see all of the citations in your library, from EndNote's References menu select, Show All References.
